The Black Feather

Ilva

You want to know how I became the chronicler? I was seventeen, and I would never have put this story in the chronicle. Now it's in a book. You read it as me.

Excerpt

The ink won’t dry. You blow across the line, too hard, and the flame cowers like a dog that expects the stick.

“Don’t let it go out,” you say. Docht crawls from the candle dish, hardly bigger than a fist and red as charcoal around the edges, and props the flame back up with a snort. Where he sat on the desk earlier, a gray smudge of ash has burned itself into the wood.

What you tell her writes the rest of the book. The paths you don't take stay locked.
