Who Counts in the Fog
One more letter every night. And it's your name.
Runa is a fever healer at the well, and she sleeps badly. Then a letter arrives with a pressed mint leaf, the mark of her teacher Hedda, who vanished in the fog weeks fourteen years ago. It leads her to Reedholt: nine houses on stilts around a pond where something counts. A child has moon fever, a sheet hangs in every window, and on one of them a name grows night after night. You read as Runa, you choose, and every choice costs something.
Content note: horror for adults. Death, grief, a sick child in danger, drowning. None of it is spelled out; the fear comes from what you don't see.

Excerpt
THE BEGINNINGThe door is locked when you get home, and there is a letter on the table anyway.
You stop on the threshold with the key still in your hand. The fever room smells of vinegar, cold chamomile, and the tallow of the lamp you forgot to turn all the way down this morning. The jars are lined up on the shelf. You left the chair by the stove at an angle, and that is how it stands. There are two keys to this house. One is in your hand. The other one went with Hedda, your teacher, the woman who always smelled of mint, when she left one autumn for a sick child in the south and never came back.
Something stirs in your apron pocket. Kerbel pushes his head over the edge, a round, moss-green Beanling hardly bigger than your palm, with two broad leaves on top of his head that he raises when something makes him curious. He does not raise them now. He stares at the table with his black button eyes, and the leaves fold down until they lie flat against his head.
Nobody at the well can tell you what a Beanling really is. A creature, round and stubborn, and every one of them carries the place it came from. Kerbel came from the herb garden behind this house, from Hedda’s garden. When he is frightened, the whole room smells of crushed chervil, the herb he’s named for. Right now it does.
What you do as Runa writes the rest of the book. The paths you don't take stay locked.
How you read it
READING PACE- 1Read at nightThe book has 8 chapters. On your first read, at most 4 open per day, the next ones at midnight (German time). It's a story about nights; it shouldn't be over in one afternoon.
- 2ChooseAt many points you decide what Runa does. Every choice costs something. The other paths stay locked.
- 3After your first endingOnce you reach an ending, there is no pace anymore. With ink you can go back to an earlier fork or open a secret path.
