Book 3 · SV Grünhöhe 09 · Tier 8
The penalty nobody wanted
Matchday 7, Sunday, 89th minute. Grünhöhe against Eintracht Moorstetten, 1-1. The referee points to the spot, and suddenly nobody has time for eye contact.
Okafor reties his boot, even though the boot is fine. Brehm, the captain, looks over at the bench as if the answer were written there. Only Lenny Vogt, nineteen, three weeks into first-team football, picks up the ball and tucks it under his arm.
“Give it here,” says Brehm. It doesn’t sound like an order. More like a favour.
Lenny doesn’t give it.
Someone on the far side shouts his name and gets the stress wrong. The stand behind the goal is forty people strong, and all forty are on their feet. Lenny puts the ball down and turns it until the valve points up. His uncle taught him that. Whether it does anything, nobody knows.
Three steps of run-up. The Moorstetten keeper waves his arms like he’s guiding a plane in.
Lenny hits it waist-high, to the left. The keeper dives right.
After that, Lenny doesn’t remember much. Only that Okafor gets to him first. And that the boot really is undone now.
