It mostly has flights to European metropolitan and leisure destinations as well as a number of intercontinental services.
The new airport replaced Tempelhof, Schönefeld, and Tegel airports (with the first already closed in 2008, followed by the last two in 2020), and has since become the only commercial airport serving Berlin and the surrounding State of Brandenburg, an area with 6 million inhabitants; however, much of Schönefeld's underlying infrastructure, including a runway, has been re-used by the new airport, and some of Berlin Brandenburg's new infrastructure, such as the control tower, was used by Schönefeld's operations in the lead-up to BER's proper opening.
